Ranger is an occupation, started in the game Pokemon Ranger. Rangers are people who use the powers of different wild Pokemon to stop natural disasters, help solve mysteries, and help people in predicaments.
Rangers do not use Pokeballs. Also, they only have one Pokemon, called their partner. A partner Pokemon is a Pokemon that they have created a special bond with. This partner stays with you forever.
All rangers have a device called a Styler. This allows them to temporarily control wild Pokémon and scan Pokémon to check how healthy they are and make sure that they are not being interfered with by outside forces.
To control a wild Pokemon, a ranger must use their Styler to circle a Pokemon many times. If a Pokemon touches the ring, the ranger must start over again. If the ring is broken from a Pokemon's attack, it damages the styler. If a styler breaks, it is the end of the owner's career as a Ranger.
Once a wild Pokemon is captured, the ranger may use its powers one time before releasing it again. For example: Water types can douse fires, fire types can hay, grass types can cut fences, rock types can break boulders, and flying types can blow things away. Depending on how strong the Pokemon is, it may or may not be able to do it's job. For example, maybe a Mudkip might not be able to put out a large fire, but a Swampert can.
To become a ranger, one must write letters to the Ranger Leader of the town they want to be a ranger in. Not every town has a Ranger Base. Not everybody who writes can become a ranger, the Ranger Leader must think that you are fit to take the position. It takes a number of letters before the Ranger Leader can decide. Each base has a different uniform, depending on the climate or conditions one has to face at and around the town.
People with multiple Pokemon, such as trainers and breeders, can become rangers. If they are accepted, they must stop their occupation and go become a full time ranger. They have to release or give away all of their Pokemon except the one that they are closest too.
I hope this helped you learn about what it takes to be a ranger, and what rangers are. Maybe you might become a ranger some day!
